Summer Programs at the Library

Summer Programs at the Library
This year's theme for the Summer Reading Program is "A Universe of Stories"

This year the kick-off event for the White Lake Community Library’s summer learning program will feature local balloon artist, Bill Uithoven, and family band Gina Jams, starring Gina Faino and sons. There will also be free ice pops. The family-friendly event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 20.

“A Universe of Stories” is the theme for this year’s free, 6-week program designed to keep kids reading and learning during the summer months. It is open to all youth, preschoolers through 6th grade, with a separate program for teens.  The children’s program will feature weekly Play and Learn sessions, craft programs, and Family Night events for all ages.  Several special events just for older children and teens are also planned.  Sign-up begins on Monday, June 17, and the program ends on Friday, July 26.

Program participants will receive a welcome kit full of goodies, including a set of reading logs for recording their reading adventures. The first six reading logs each child returns will earn them a coupon for a treat from a local business, or free admission to a West Michigan sporting event or attraction.  Each log is also an entry in the grand prize drawing.

This year’s grand prizes include an overnight trip for four to Great Lakes Crossings, including gift cards to Round One, Sea Life, Legoland, Rainforest Café, Peppa Pig World of Play, a shopping spree, and an overnight stay; a VIP experience at the Air Zoo; four John Ball Zoo memberships; one family four pack of passes to the Air Zoo. These prizes are made possible by a partnership with WOTV8, Meijer, Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, West Michigan Whitecaps, Grand Rapids Griffins, John Ball Zoo, Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, and the Air Zoo.  Funding for local programming is provided by the Friends of White Lake Community Library and the used book sale.  Additional local supporters include Subway, Pitkins, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, The General Store, Home Services of White Lake, Family Video, NorthStar Cinemas, and Emily White.

A variety of children’s programs will be offered throughout the six-week program, including drop-in art experiences on Mondays from 10 a.m. till noon, all-ages Play and Learn programs on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and again at 6:30 p.m., and Family Night programs every Thursday at 6:30. Some Family Night highlights include an “Animal Astronauts” presentation featuring live animals on June 27 and a visit from “The Spoon Man” on July 11.

This August the library is also pleased to announce a new program for kids called Español Ed-ventures—an introduction to Spanish for 6-12 year olds through stories, songs, and play held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks starting August 6th . This exciting new program is made possible thanks to a grant received from the LSTA and the State of Michigan. It is free, but registration will be required. A complete calendar of events is available at the library, and on the library’s website at wlclib.org.

This year’s teen reading challenge, for young people age 12 and up, offers a chance to win prizes for reading or listening to books during the summer.  Participants earn a small prize for reading 250 and 500 pages, and are also eligible for the grand prize drawing.  Additional prizes will be awarded to the top three teen readers. Several events just for teens will also be offered, including gaming sessions every Friday from 2 to 4, and an after-hours teen night on the last Tuesday of each month from June – August.
