Adult Summer Reading Program

FOR RELEASE:  July 30, 2019

STORYTELLER’S NIGHT SKY and PAINTING THE SKY at WHITE LAKE LIBRARY

Two August programs will bring you closer to our beautiful night skies

White Lake Community Library presents Storyteller’s Night Sky with Mary Stewart Adams on Monday evening, August 12th from 8:00 to 10:00 pm, and Paint the Sky with Casey Bemis on Friday afternoon, August 16th from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. Both programs are open to the public.

Mary Stewart Adams is a global advocate for starry skies. In 2011, she led the team that established the 9th International Dark Sky Park in her home state of Michigan. Mary has received numerous honors for her work advocating for dark skies including the first-ever awarded International Dark Sky Park of the Year Award in 2017. She was also instrumental in legislation passed in July 2012 which now protects 35,000 acres of state-owned land for its naturally dark skies.  Adams loves to combine her extensive knowledge of ancient astrology with the research and ideas of contemporary astronomy.  She travels far and wide teaching her humanities-based approach to understanding the celestial world around us, and bringing the cultural influences of star knowledge to sky lovers of all ages. Her program, also called Storyteller’s Night Sky, is heard weekly on public radio stations.

A clear weather night on Monday, August 12th means the library audience will be outside on the lawn. But clouds or even rain will not dampen Adams’ amazing presentation. You are welcome to come shortly before the library closes and stay for an evening of astronomical magic when the sky turns dark (and you know how late that is!) All ages are welcome, registration is not required, and you may want to bring along a blanket or lawn chair. Storyteller’s Night Sky is a free event.

Our second night sky program will be on Friday, August 16th. Local artist Casey Bemis will be on hand to guide sky lovers on how to paint a night sky. Bemis, an artist who is not constrained to one medium, has many talents on display at the Arts Council of White Lake (ACWL) Nuveen Center on Colby. At Paint the Sky, though, she will be focusing on skyscape painting, and will have all of the materials at the library to demonstrate how to turn a blank canvas into a two dimensional artwork.

You can see Bemis’ work on her website, www.cjbemis.com, and also read her blog, which happens to include a study for a painting she made of a sunset over Lake Michigan from Duck Lake Park, and a photo of the final painting.  Another noteworthy blog mentions that Bemis has teamed up with ACWL on a fun painting project to help people paint their animals.

Participants must sign up with ACWL, either at their studio at 106 East Colby in Whitehall, or on their website www.artswhitelake.org. Supplies for a 10x16 acrylic painting will cost $30, and your afternoon of relaxing painting instruction will include light refreshments.
